Is another increase in undergraduate (NUS) tuition fees imminent?

I received an email in my inbox a short while ago, sent out by the Office of Student Affairs for a meeting with the NUS Provost on Tuition Fees for the new cohort AY12/13

The meeting will take place on Wednesday and the notice of meeting was only sent out yesterday to NUS student leaders and a reply was required by today, 1p.m.

In it, it was stated that “The tuition fees for both undergraduates and graduate students will be revised.”

Is an increase in undergraduate tuition fees imminent and what is/ are the basis for such an increase. The last increase of 4% took place just last year for AY2011/2012.

The annual tuition fees to be paid for most undergraduate courses at NUS by the incoming Singapore Citizen undergrads will increase by four per cent.

Fees for Architecture, Business, Law, Music, Nursing and Pharmacy will increase by six per cent.

This means that undergrads will pay between S$280 and S$540 more and their annual fees will now cost between S$7,170 and S$20,150.

The new fees will apply throughout their course duration.

‎"[. . .] there's one gentleman standing right behind, at least he was behind just now, Bernard Chen, whose the Secretary of the Youth Wing. A few weeks ago, we launched our Manifesto. I came into this shophouse, maybe 2 hours before the manifesto launch, Bernard was mopping the staircase. And this is the sort of commitment that we have from our party members [. . .] and that is something very humbling" - Pritam Singh, 25 April 2011
