In slightly less than a month’s time on 10 July 2011 and 17 July 2011, Aljunied GRC under the Workers’ Party will be holding its very first grassroots activity for the residents of Bedok Reservoir-Punggol, Paya Lebar, Eunos, Serangoon and Kaki Bukit division. For the first time ever, the Workers’ Party has been given the mandate to serve residents outside of Hougang SMC and the Aljunied Constituency Committee has chosen a 1-Day Malaysia Tour to kick-start our grassroots outreach for the foreseeable five years.
Personally, over the past two weeks as I walked the ground, shook the hands of residents and handed them each a promotional flyer, I felt a sense of liberation albeit with a heavy heart. Finally, the Workers’ Party was able to move out from the territorial confines of Hougang SMC to bring our brand of grassroots work into Aljunied GRC.
Grassroots or more commonly known as 草根 is the fundamental and most basic tenet of Singapore politics. By grassroots, I mean a sincere movement from the residents living in the particular constituency, taking ownership of their own community, fostering an environment conducive to citizen activism and the development of a multi-racial, multi-faceted community leadership is the by-product of such a movement.
Grassroots events and community outreaches should never be staged to please a particular Member-of-Parliament. Neither should it be serving as the eyes and ears of the incumbent government and only providing positive feedback and matters that are music to the ears of the representative in the constituency and hence creating an unhealthy impression that all is well on the ground and any hard and uncomfortable response from the residents are deemed as noise. Nothing but noise. Grassroots should also never be about a numbers game, about trying to fill up every seat and buying up every ticket just to paint a picture of overwhelming support for the Member-of-Parliament. Grassroots should never ever be self-serving. Serving in a grassroots committee in the name of the residents with an eye for political promotion or personal self-glorification in the form of National Day awards and various accolades should be frowned upon and rejected. How can one serve the community with the “I” and “Me” constantly on their mind?
Grassroots is non-partisan and should be sincere. Grassroots efforts must be sustainable and last throughout the electoral mandate. It comes from the bottom of one’s heart, to enrich the lives of the residents and foster a community camaraderie and identity that is unique only to the residents in that constituency. It involves constant leg-work and making do with every single dollar. Throwing in thousands, tens of thousands and even millions of dollars into the physical infrastructure does not bring you a dynamic community and a responsible leadership. Giving the residents a voice in the form of a localised election to elect the Chairman and members of the management committee should be encouraged and facilitated. At the end of the day, grassroots is about integrating the different facets of the community and the various individuals in it, strengthening the spirit of self-reliance and mutual assistance and to truly discover or rediscover the idea of living in a community of Singaporeans, regardless of race, language or religion.
This is the grassroots that Singapore needs and this is the grassroots that I hope through my involvement in the Aljunied Constituency Committee, will help to foster in the months and years to come. I don’t know about you, but I am pretty excited to go the extra mile, to spend the weekend and to climb the flights of stairs to bring the residents of Aljunied GRC closer to one another, for the betterment of this nation and the future of our children. A sincere and unpretentious grassroots is the the long-lost jigsaw of nation-building. The downward spiral into arrogance and insincerity should be avoided at all costs.
